Drake's Retreat

Chapter Eleven

Maggie woke with a sense of dread. Confusion took hold of her for a moment before she remembered what had happened. She buried her face in her hands and let out a long, slow breath. Drake had been angry with her last night, and now she had to face him again this morning.

She ran a hand through her tussled hair and dug inside her backpack for her hairbrush. As she brushed out her tangles she swallowed, trying to moisten her dry throat. Her eyes felt a little swollen and raw so she went to the sink to throw water on her face, and she drank a sip to ease the dryness in her throat.

She wondered how Drake would react to her this morning as she headed down the narrow passageway. She hoped his burning anger had cooled during the night. She stopped at the door and said a silent prayer, Lord, please help me to face Drake and guide me as to what to say to him. When she mustered up enough nerve, she stepped outside and immediately smelled freshly cooked bacon and saw Drake in front of the fire-pit. He had a fire going and had a pan of eggs frying over the flames. If she hadn’t been so emotionally sore from the night before, she would have been impressed.

She stepped into the woods for some privacy, carrying her much appreciated toilet paper with her. When she returned, she couldn’t bring herself to meet his eyes. She sat at the table with her back to him and shuffled through her backpack. She pulled out hand cleanser and washed her hands, then continued looking in her backpack for nothing in particular. She wanted to appear busy and distracted hoping it would make it easier to avoid him. She should’ve known better.

Drake walked over and sat directly across from her, making it impossible to ignore him. He set the pan of eggs on the table, added a plate of bacon next to it and said, “I know you’re hungry, and I know you’re hurting. I intend to fix both.”

Maggie’s eyes shot up to his. Concern etched his face and his anger from the night before seemed to have disappeared. She glanced down at the eggs and bacon and asked, “I see how you can fix the first, but the second?”

“I won’t condone what you did Maggie, and I won’t change my mind about it. But, I am sorry I hurt you.”

Maggie sucked in a deep breath, dropped her backpack on the ground and nearly fainted. She couldn’t believe Drake Strong had just apologized to her. She looked into his sincere eyes and felt her heart race with hope. She didn’t think she had it in her to fight with him today, now maybe she didn’t have to.

She admitted, “I’m surprised to hear you say that.”

“I shouldn’t have said what I did about your fiancé. I know how much it hurts.”

She saw a glimpse of compassion in his expression. “You do?”

He nodded his head and scooted the plate with the bacon on it in front of them.
